Obituary of Carole Preetorius Kirkland

COLUMBIA—Funeral services for Carole Preetorius Kirkland, 59, of Columbia, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 27, 2013 at Trenholm Road United Methodist Church. The Reverend Mike Smith will officiate. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. in Bamberg Memory Gardens. The Reverend Robert Cannon and The Reverend Carol Cannon will officiate at graveside. Pallbearers will be Charles Kirkland, Ernie Lawhorne, Frankie Marion, John Tatum, Warren Powell and Eddie Laney. Honorary pallbearers will be Donald Shapiro and John Baker. The family will greet friends at the home of her sister, Norma Kirkland, 6620 Longbrook Road, Columbia, SC 29206 from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday evening, and following the service on Friday morning in the church parlor. Ms. Kirkland passed away on Friday, September 20, 2013. Born in Bamberg, SC, she was a daughter of the late Norman Kirkland and Eloise Preetorius Kirkland. She was a lifelong area resident and a member of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church. She was active in the Children's Bible School and a member of the Hope Sunday School Class. Carole was a longtime employee of C.S.C. Computer Sciences Corporation, (formerly PMSC) with over 25 years of service. She was a graduate of Jefferson Davis Academy in Blackville and earned her Bachelor's Degree at Georgia Southern University. Carole was an artist, gardener and a very creative individual. Carole was totally devoted to her daughter, Georgia, who was the love of her life. She had a big heart for all in need whether two legged or four legged. Surviving are her daughter, Georgia Preetorius Kirkland; sister, Norma Kirkland and husband, John Farley of Columbia; brother, Charles William Kirkland of Bamberg; and sister, Margaret Kirkland Worsham of Clemson; nephew, Russell Kirkland Sursavage of Atlanta and three fur babies, Biscuit, Jo-Jo and Kitty.
