Obituary of J.D. Byrd

WHITE ROCK—Funeral services for J. D. Byrd, Sr., 93 of White Rock, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 28, 2013 at First Baptist Church of Cayce. Rev. Dr. Pete Cassidy and Pastor Joe Borgkvist will officiate. Entombment will follow in Southland Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, 2013 at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Cayce, 600 Holland Ave., Cayce, SC 29033. Mr. Byrd, beloved husband of 72 years to Dorothy Lucas Byrd, passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2013. Born in Kershaw, J.D. was a son of the late Robert Ward Bird and Sally Catoe Bird. He was a lifelong area resident and a member of First Baptist Church of Cayce. He was devoted to his church and was a member of the Men's Fellowship Sunday School Class. J.D. enjoyed gardening, fishing and driving. He retired from Huckabee/Thurston Motor Lines after 30 years of service. Surviving in addition to his loving wife, Dorothy Lucas Byrd; children, daughter, Patsy Byrd Davis (Scott) of Cayce, son, James D. Byrd, Jr. of White Rock; daughter, Kathy Byrd Smith of Lexington; nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruth Byrd of Columbia, Frankie Byrd Eubanks of Bethune, Sue Byrd Bouza of Nebraska and Kathryn Byrd Vinson (J.W.) of Camden; brother, Merley Byrd (Joann) of Jefferson, along with many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three sisters and his loving dachshund, Prissy.
