Obituary of Alice Reid Widdifield

COLUMBIA—Alice Reid Widdifield 89, of Columbia, passed away October 4, 2013, in Columbia, SC. Visitation will be held at Greenlawn Funeral Home in Columbia, SC on Saturday, October 19th, 2013 from 1:00-3:00 p.m., followed by a graveside service in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Serenity Gardens. Reverend Anthony Hughes will officiate. Pallbearers will be her sons, grandsons and son-in-laws. Greenlawn Funeral Home is handling the funeral arrangements. Alice was born in Winston Salem, N.C. to William Floyd and Pearl W. Reid on April 30th, 1924. She married John M. Widdifield following his discharge from the Army at the end of WW II and settled in Columbia in 1956. After raising five children she turned her passion for painting into a second career, opening an art store and studio. Many local aspiring artists remember her as a talented and compassionate teacher. She found joy in inspiring others to discover their artistic side. She also enjoyed reading and cooking, especially baking, donating countless baked goods to raise money for the Walk for Life. She was affectionately known as the "Cake Lady." Alice is preceded in death by her husband, John Morris Widdifield, her parents, Floyd and Pearl Reid, and her brother Gilbert Reid. Alice is survived by her sister Lee (Sid) Schuler, sons Rick Widdifield and Greg (Tuula) Widdifield, daughters Donna (Roy) Cooper, Janie Widdifield, Lea(Kedron) Moser. She was affectionately known as Nana by her seven grandchildren: Matthew Cooper, Jessie Cooper, Laurel Widdifield, Ellen Widdifield , Bryan Howle, Reid Moser and Heath Moser.
