Obituary of Calvin Leroy Stewart

COLUMBIA-Calvin Leroy Stewart, 90, husband of his beloved late wife Frances Marian Holstein Stewart, passed away Tuesday, October 22, 2013. The family will receive friends and loved ones at the Greenlawn Funeral Home at 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC between 2:00-3:00 pm Saturday, October 26, 2013 with a memorial service directly following in the chapel. Cal and Marian were married May 2, 1950 and celebrated 59 years together. Born 5 October 1923 in Gastonia, NC, he was a World War II naval veteran and graduated with a BS in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina. Cal worked 20 years with private insurance companies, followed by 16 years with the South Carolina Department of Insurance before becoming the Director of the SC Patients' Compensation Fund and Manager of the SC Joint Underwriters Association. In 1992 he was appointed to Governor's Health Insurance Committee by Governor Carroll A. Campbell and in 1999 was awarded the Order of the Silver Crescent by Governor Frank P. Hodges. Cal retired at age 75 to begin his golden years with family and traveling the world over with Marian. Cal was predeceased by his mother, Corrie Mae Freeman Stewart (Gastonia, NC); father, Walter Clyde Stewart (Gastonia, NC) and sister, Glenda Mae Stewart (Gastonia, NC). He is survived by his sisters: Dorothy Jean Aycock (Stewart), Gastonia, NC; Patricia Ann Howell, New Hall, CA; daughters: Judy Pitts, Kay Lowder (Bob), Beth Gladden and Linda Stewart, all of Columbia; grand-daughter: Amanda Pitts Bennett (Lee): grand-sons: James William Pitts III, Robert Stewart Lowder and James Nicholas Gladden; great-grand-sons: William Robert Bennett and James Stewart Bennett and many special nieces, grand-nieces, nephews and grand-nephews. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the loving care provided to their father by Ms. Viola Brown, Ms. Debbie Cornelius and the staff of Atria Forest Lake.
