Obituary of Lawrence W. Rutland

West Columbia—Memorial service for Lawrence W. Rutland, Jr., 80, of West Columbia, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 4, 2013 at Thompson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Reverend John McKeown will officiate. The family will greet friends following the service at the funeral home. Mr. Rutland passed away on Friday, November 1, 2013. Born in New Holland, he was a son of the late Lawrence W. Rutland and Annie Mae Williamson Rutland. He was a lifelong area resident and proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He was a member of Red Bank United Methodist Church and was a Master Mason and a member of Sinclair Lodge #154. He retired from City of Columbia Fire Department after 25 years of service. Lawrence enjoyed crossword puzzles, tinkering in his shed, trips to Maggie Valley, NC, watching his grandchildren play sports and spending time with his family. Surviving are his daughters, Judy Powers (Church) and Kim Rutland; step-daughters, Margaret Hamilton, Laura Smith (Tony) and Paula Koon (Timmy); sister, Annie Hulon; 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and numerous family members and dear friends, Jack and Joan Kates. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Peggy Jones Rutland, 7 sisters and 4 brothers.
