Obituary of William Michael Hicks

WEST COLUMBIA—Michael Hicks of Lexington, SC passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at the age of 65. He was surrounded by the wonderful staff at the Veteran's Victory House and fellow veterans in Walterboro, SC. He was born February 9, 1948 in West Columbia, SC to the late Ray and Dorothy Mitchell Hicks. After graduating from Brookland-Cayce High School in 1966, he enlisted in the United States Army. Michael soon became a Warrant Officer and flew Helicopters in the Vietnam War. He dropped off and picked up several troops from the battlefields as a pilot for the First Air Cavalry and was a Purple Heart recipient. Bringing his brothers back from battle safely was the passion that drove him throughout this time in his life. He was fortunate enough to finish his time in active duty in beautiful Oahu, HI as a man that flew helicopters for work and drove a convertible Jaguar for pleasure. Eventually, Michael moved back to his home state with his son, Jai, whom he raised himself from the age of three years old. Working at that time for the United States Post Office, he was actively involved in the union and held the title of President. During the Christmas season, you could often see him delivering the mail in a Santa Claus suit, bringing joy to the people of West Columbia. He enjoyed taking his son fishing, hunting and teaching him how to play sports. Michael is survived by his son, Jai, and his wife, Mary Beth of Piedmont, SC; granddaughter Lola; sister, Donna McLeod (Jimmy) of Columbia, SC and several nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Ray Hicks. He will be missed dearly and notably remembered by those who know him well by his hearty laugh that would fill the room with joy. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 11, 21014 at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, 4720 Augusta Road, Lexington, SC 29073. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans, 6437 Garners Ferry Road, Columbia, SC 29209.
