Obituary of William Bruce Ginn

WEST COLUMBIA-Funeral service for William Bruce Ginn, Sr, 89, of West Columbia, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Holland Avenue Baptist Church, 801 12th Street in Cayce. Dr. Ken Harmon will officiate. Burial will follow in Celestial Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Salvation Army, 2025 Main Street, Columbia, SC 29201. Mr. Ginn died Wednesday, November 13, 2013. He was born in Elberton, Georgia on October 18, 1924 to Lonnie Coleman and Alva Eavenson Ginn. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII as a turret gunner in a B-17 bomber and flew in 30+ missions over Germany. Mr. Ginn was married to the former Barbara Lackey of Atlanta. They relocated to Columbia, SC in 1983. He was a member of Holland Avenue Baptist Church in Cayce. Mr. Ginn retired as a bridge steel inspector at SCDOT in 1997. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara L. Ginn of West Columbia; sons, William Bruce Ginn, Jr. and Robert Coleman Ginn of Georgia; daughter, Becky Pilgrim (David) of Lexington; 7 grandchildren, Jeremy Ginn, Cliff Holcomb, Ian Ginn, Carey Powell, Christy Smith, Jessica Cochran and Alex Pilgrim; 7 great-grandchildren, Dylan Ginn, Nathan Ginn, Tristan Powell, Keely Smith, Allison Ginn, Lillian Smith and Austin Ginn; and a large and loving extended family. Mr. Ginn was predeceased by his parents and four siblings; brothers, Coleman and James Ginn; and sisters, Josephine Gantt Davis and Mary Jean Riggs. The family would like to express their great appreciation to Hospice Care of Tri-County, his wonderful nurse, Melanie, and special aide to Mr. Ginn, Josette; very caring social worker, Sue, and volunteer David Cobb who was a special friend to Mr. Ginn. We would also like to acknowledge and thank our "special angel" Karen Malloy for her love and selfless devotion to our family.
