Obituary of Doris Carver Kolb

Doris Carver Kolb, 83, of Columbia, passed away on November 17, 2013. The family will receive friends from 11:00 to 12:00 P.M. (Noon), on Thursday, November 21, 2013, at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209. A committal service will immediately follow the visitation in Greenlawn Memorial Park with Rev. Dr. Terry Cagle officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Greenlawn Baptist Church. The second eldest child of Hattie Elizabeth and Roy Lee Carver, Doris was born May 7, 1930 in Greenville, SC. Growing up with siblings, Charles, Frances and Betty; the Carver Family followed their father from Greenville, to Memphis, Tenn., to Sumter, SC, wherever the mill jobs were available. It was in Memphis that Doris held her first "paying" job at Kress Dime Store. This began a lengthy career for the shy girl. Doris and her family were always active in their local Baptist Church, attending services and singing in the choir. Doris began singing in the choir at age 4 and thoroughly enjoyed playing the piano and singing the old Gospel Hymns throughout her life. It was during her time in Sumter, attending Salem Baptist Church; she met her future husband James Kolb. After the nuptials, the couple moved to Columbia to continue their careers and start a family. Once Doris completed courses at Columbia Commercial College, she joined Security Federal Savings & Loan, from which she retired 34 years later. It was during the first few years of her employment that their daughter, Beth was born. During her employment with Security Federal, she rose through the ranks to become Branch Manager at several of their offices. Doris enjoyed her vacation time with extended family members along the South Carolina shore. She also took up a sport of James' and learned golf after retirement. And in those extra hours, she took pleasure in endless yard work that reflected in a beautiful space to enjoy BBQs with friends and family. For many years, Doris and James enjoyed their long relationship with Greenlawn Baptist Church and singing in the choir. One of her hidden talents was her ability to play piano by ear. This shy girl blossomed into a lovely Southern Lady and was deeply loved by many and will be missed. Her husband James predeceased her after 64 years of marriage in March 2012. She leaves behind their daughter Beth and son-in-law Bill Cappel, Sister Frances Leslie, of Fountain Inn, SC, sister-in-law Cecile and husband Linwood Davidson, brother-in-law Marion Kolb and wife Emily along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends will miss her gentle spirit and loving heart.
