Obituary of Carol Erwin Shuping

COLUMBIA-Carol Erwin Shuping, 85, of Columbia entered into rest, Monday, November 18, 2013 at Palmetto Health Richland. Born Wednesday, December 21, 1927 in Badin, NC (Stanley County) she was a daughter of the late Wilson Mac and Florence Augusta (Hix) Erwin. Mrs. Shuping attended Pfeiffer Junior College, and later graduated from Appalachian State with a degree in education where she also played basketball for two years. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Columbia, and was also an educator at Lower Richland High School. She started as a substitute teacher, and was later asked to work full time in the Home Economics Department. After 17 years she retired as an administrator from the high school. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her six siblings. Mrs. Shuping is survived by her husband, A. J. Shuping, Jr., with whom she shared a devoted and blessed union of more than 62 years; two daughters, Carole S. Blocker (Paul) of Canton, GA, and Sheila Benz (Todd) of DePere, WI; son A. J. Shuping, III (Tonya) of Simpsonville, SC; six grandsons, Travis (Beth), Tyson and Lance Blocker, Christopher and Matthew Shuping and Justin Benz; great grandchildren, Lillian Maci and Jacob Paul Blocker; and very close family friend, Dicky Regan. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M., on Friday, November 22, 2013 at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209, with Pastor Robyn Garrison officiating. Entombment will immediately follow in the Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 8:30 P.M., on Thursday, November 21, 2013 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to any of the following: Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1000 Greenlawn Drive, Columbia, SC 29209; Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 810 Dutch Square Boulevard, Suite 114, Columbia, SC 29210; or to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.
