Obituary of Emmalene McMakin Hughes

CAYCE—Funeral services for Emmalene McMakin Hughes, 89, of Cayce, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Thompson Funeral Home, West Columbia Chapel, 200 State Street, West Columbia, SC 29169. Rev. Nathan Brown will be officiating. Burial will follow in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. Honorary pallbearers will be the Joy Sunday School Class from State Street Baptist Church. The family will greet friends 1- 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Mrs. Hughes, beloved wife of the late Bartle C. Hughes, passed away on Tuesday, December 17, 2013. Born in Spartanburg, she was a daughter of the late Charles Harold McMakin, Sr. and Annie Meola Bell. She was a longtime area resident formerly of Spartanburg. She was a longtime member of State Street Baptist Church and of the Joy Sunday School Class. She worked at Dodd's and Howard's Department Stores. Surviving are her daughter, Meola Snyder of Columbia; son, John Monroe Hughes of Cayce; three grandchildren, Jennifer Boloutchi, Stephanie Hughes and Corinne Dawkins and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Meola Corene McMakin and brothers, Clarence Garvin McMakin and Charles Harold McMakin, Jr., CDR US Navy. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to State Street Baptist Church, General Fund, 1420 State Street, Cayce, SC 29033.
