Obituary of Bruce E. Raynor

West Columbia—Bruce Elwin Raynor, 93, husband of Jean Latham Raynor, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at his home surrounded by his friends and family. Bruce was a life-long resident of West Columbia, SC and the son of the late Mary Louise Harmon Raynor and Neil Caviness (Cam) Raynor. He graduated from Brookland Cayce High School and attended both Clemson University and the University of SC. He retired with 35 years of loyal service from SCE&G. After retirement, Bruce and his wife Jean, traveled all over the United States with their church friends. Bruce and Jean were Charter Members of Trinity United Methodist Church in West Columbia and faithfully served at the church's yearly barbecue and loved attending the senior citizens group, The 49ers. For 13 years, Bruce and his wife faithfully delivered Meals on Wheels to the local shut ins. When God made Bruce, He broke the mold. Bruce was always cheerful and had a positive attitude. He never met a stranger and everyone loved him. An avid sports fan, Bruce loved following both the Clemson Tigers and the Carolina Gamecocks. He spent his time at the Carolina ball games and at Folly Beach, SC, where his family had a summer cottage. Bruce enjoyed regular fishing trips with his good buddy, Melton Martin, and taking his family on outings to the Pine Island Club. One of his favorite family activities was taking his family camping to Rocks Pond and in the mountains. Bruce was a member of the Ruritan and held numerous office positions in his church. Bruce always looked forward to the weekly visits of his good friend, Jim Miller, who recorded and delivered the church services so faithfully. The greatest joy in Bruce's life was his wife, Jean, and his family and friends. Bruce was exceptionally grateful spending his final days with all of his family by his side and being faithfully cared for by his wife of 71 years, Jean, whom he adoringly called, "my angel". Surviving are his wife, Bertha Jean Latham Raynor, his daughters, Linda Ann Raynor Berry (Charles Edward Berry) and Mary Gale Raynor Hook (I.D.Hook); his grandchildren, Deidra (Dee Dee) Hook Brogan (Jim), Charles Edward (Chuck) Berry, Jr. (Jennifer), James DeWitt (Jamie) Hook (Elizabeth), and Melissa Raynor Berry Rogers. Also surviving is his dear sister, Theresa Raynor Hudson Awtrey.
