Obituary of Martin G. Jagels

WEST COLUMBIA—A funeral service with full military honors for Major Martin Gene Jagels, US Army (ret.), 76, of West Columbia, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 21, 2014 in the Celestial Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel. Major Jagels, beloved husband for 53 years to Barbara A. Jagels, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2014. Born in Guthrie, OK, he was a son of the late Oswald Martin Jagels and Ellen Loren Runkle Jagels. He retired from the United States Army in 1975 after 22 years of service with the rank of Major. During his military career, he was in the Special Forces, Airborne and the Army Rangers, and completed two tours in Vietnam. Major Jagels received the Purple Heart Award, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Bronze Star with 2 oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal and the Air Medal among other commendations. After his retirement, he received his Master's Degree in Accounting at the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. He later retired from teaching Accounting and Hotel Restaurant & Tourism at the University of South Carolina. He was the author of the text book "Hospitality Accounting and Management" which he taught for many years at USC. Surviving in addition to his loving wife, Barbara Ann Jagels of West Columbia; daughter, Christy Mohler of South Congaree; two granddaughters, Victoria and Emily Morgan; siblings, Ellen Marie Bores, Clarence Fussell, Gary Fussell, Tommy Fussell and Marge Cooper; along with numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belford Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256.
