I extend my deepest sympathy to the Bessinger family. I worked for Mr. B. when the store in Santee first opened. He was always very kind & sweet to me,often sitting with me and talking during my lunch breaks. I last saw him at his brother Thomas' restaurant about a year ago and was surprised that he remembered me,as I was aware he had Alzheimer's. I will remember Mr. B. as a hard as nails employer, yet a sweet Southern gentleman. Rest in Peace, Mr. B. ~ Pam Simmons

I send my sincere condolences to Mr. B's family. He will be missed by all but I personally am grateful for the opportunity to have worked for him & with various members of his family twice in my life. Once when I was in my younger days & as recent as 8 years or so ago on Hwy. 6 at I-20. I wish you all blessings & peace at this time. My memories are of a fine, courageous, and hardworking man with the most gracious smile. His "barbeque truly does make you happy"!! God bless you Mr. B.

To the Bessinger Family, my heart and prayers are with you. Mr. Maurice was a wonderful down to earth good man. My Daddy (Gary Kennedy, Wagener) used to bring us to eat at Piggy Park when we were young and even though my Dad had his own restaurant (Wagener Drive-In) he enjoyed going to eat at Mr. Maurice's. Now that I am grown I still enjoyed visits that included good food at Bessinger's.

Maurice was an exceptional man and provided us with many wonderful memories. He had the ability to make each meeting with him "personal" and special. His moving on to the presence of the Lord is wonderful for him but a loss to us. Our family continues to pray for you during this time of adjustment. Jeannine Meade and children.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Bessinger. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of eating at the Piggie Park in Orangeburg. We traveled to Charleston from Greenwood quite often back then and our favorite route was through Orangeburg. It was almost always near lunch when we'd arrive there, so, the Piggie Park was nearly always our eatery. The double dipped onion rings were my favorite and have always judged onion rings by the standard of Mr. Bessinger's rings. None have ever even come close. I will miss him, especially his love of history, and the tradition of our great state. God speed, Mr. Maurice.

I consider Maurice a very good friend and it was an honor to know him. I was his flag guy for a number of years and he wore out hundreds of em. He was certainly not the man the media portrayed him. I have no doubt he's in Heaven and with a smile he finally gets to meet Robert E. Lee.

Maurice Bessinger used to have little book stores in some of his restaurants. When my book was new, Maurice ordered a number of copies for those stores. We had been planning on visiting South Carolina so I delivered them in person. I was pleased to see that he was passing out flyers of a book review that nationally syndicated columnist Charley Reese wrote for me. I have loved the Columbia, SC area ever since.
Thank you so much, Maurice, for introducing me to the Columbia area. Ironically, my wife and I dined at Piggy Park on your last day on Earth. We all know you were a Christian man of great faith, too.

Our prayers are with the Bessinger family. Doug and I both worked for him in the early 1980's. in fact, if it had not been for Mr. Bessinger, we would not have met. So, I guess you could say he brought us together. We had a lot of laughs working there in West Columbia. Mr. Bessinger will be missed by so many. The Brights, Doug and Sandi

One of my fondest memories of growing up in COLUMBIA was going to the Piggie Park. I remember when the contest to name the Little Joe and Big Joe was held! I have lived all over the United States and Piggie Park barbecue has remained my favorite. Thank you, Maurice and I hope to see you in heaven.

Dear Joanna and Bessinger family,
I was so very saddened to hear of Mr. Maurice passing away.
Joanna, I don't know if you remember me from W-S High, I was Patti Seay then. I am praying for you especially tonight, as I know you loved and respected your father. My father knew your daddy here in Wagener, and he sincerely admired him. I lost my father in 07, so I know the huge, empty space that a great father leaves in a daughter's heart. Know that you are in my heart and prayers right now.
I pray for you all during this time. Mr. Maurice is with the Lord he served. Pat Garvin

I used to work for Mr. B back in the days he called the 60's Revolution. I worked at the Sandwich Shop on Main Street and on Charleston Highway. I enjoyed my days with Piggie Park. I have spoken with Mr. B several times through the years. My nephew and I had an A/C company that did the A/C for the Irmo restaurant when it was built and even did some A/C work at the farm in Orangeburg County. I still go to the various locations from time to time when I want some great BBQ, Hash & rice. I'll miss him. He was a great man. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. Be Blessed. You had a wonderful Father and Grandfather. Howard
