Obituary of Bryce S. Lever

LEXINGTON—Funeral service for Bryce Smith Lever, 90, of Lexington, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 28, 2014 at First Baptist Church of West Columbia, 400 State Street, West Columbia, SC 29169. Dr. William H. "Bill" Drees will officiate. Burial will follow in Southland Memorial Gardens. The family will greet friends from 10:00-11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, 4720 Augusta Road, Lexington, SC 29073 will be assisting the family. Mr. Lever, beloved husband of 56 years to the late Ella Rose Summer Lever, passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2014. Born in Lexington, he was a son of the late Glenn Wesley Lever and Ethel Elizabeth Smith Lever. He was an active member of First Baptist Church of West Columbia, where he was a deacon and taught Sunday school. His passion for yard work spread, to his caring for all the gardens and yards at the church. He was a graduate of Lexington High School, where he played football. He was lst to play in the North-South Game. Bryce played football for Clemson before being drafted in the Army. He proudly served in the United States Army as a Private 1st Class during WWII. When he was discharged from the Army, he attended Newberry College and played on the football team and became a Columbia Motorcycle Police Officer. He retired from Exxon Corp as an LPG Technician. Bryce also worked at Suburban Propane. Bryce and Ella were among the founding members of Oak Grove Civic Club and they were known in the community for their enchanting holiday decorations. Bryce was a football coach for the Lexington Recreation Youth Football League, when they won the County State Championship in 1976. He was also an avid Gamecock fan, who attended all the games. Surviving are his daughters, Deborah Roberts of Columbia and Cheryl Outlaw (Tommy) of Lexington; son, Wesley "Wes" Lever (Angie) of Lexington; grandchildren, Will Roberts (Erin), Jason Roberts (Lindsay), Thomas W. Outlaw (Tifani) Leann Edwards (Chase), Bryson Lever and Weston Lever; great-grandchildren, Liam Roberts, Caroline Roberts and Mckenna Roberts; sister-in-law, Elaine Whitesides of Columbia; brother-in-law, William F. Shipley of West Columbia. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Bill Roberts.
