Obituary of Waymon McArthur Martin

LEXINGTON--Waymon McArthur Martin entered into eternal rest on March 4, 2014. Born in Blackville, SC on August 25, 1942, he was the middle child of the late William Everette and Jessie Sanford Martin Johnson. He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Carolyn Mathias Martin, children, Melissa Martin of Mount Pleasant, Timothy Martin (Danielle) of Lexington, "Adopted" son, Wade Amodio (Kimette) of Lexington, the loves of his life, granddaughters Abigail and Anna Martin, Goddaughters, Alexandra and Jade Amodio and her son, Jay, Brothers, Blenn Martin (Elizabeth Ann), Kenneth Martin (Ruth) of Aiken, sisters, Jeannette Jernigan (Bruce) of Lexington, Thelma Fulmer (Marshall) of Graniteville, sisters-in law, Jeanette Frye of Lexington, Martha Taylor of Gilbert, one surviving aunt, Nell Still of Barnwell and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Waymon was an active member of St. David's Lutheran church serving on many committees. Church Council, and enjoyed being a part of Lutheran Men and the Lutheran Men 100 Club. His love of the outdoors and his commitment to mentoring young men led him to spend many years working with the Boy Scouts and Explorer Troup 340. Additionally, as a founding member of the Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department and as an active member of the Oak Grove Civic Club, Waymon's dedication to the community was evident. When not spending time in his garden or simply enjoying the outdoors, he could be found behind a grill or in a kitchen cooking for church, community or friends. Waymon worked 16 years for Allis Chalmers, opened Martin's Tire Service, and retired from Frank's Car Wash and Supply Company. Visitation will be held Thursday, March 6, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home in Lexington, 4720 Augusta Road, Lexington, SC 29073. The funeral service will be at St. David Lutheran Church, West Columbia on Friday, March 7, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with the Reverend James Laurence officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. David Lutheran Church, 132 St David's Church Road, West Columbia, SC 29170. The family would like to express our gratitude to the staff of Lexington Oncology and Compassionate Care Hospice for their loving care as he courageously fought pancreatic cancer for more than a year.
