Obituary of Herbert O'Neal Stockman

GASTON—Funeral services for Herbert O'Neal Stockman, 79, of Gaston, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at Thompson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, 4720 Augusta Road, Lexington, SC 29073. Pastor Matthew Rucker will officiate. Burial will follow in Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery with Masonic and Military Rites. Pallbearers will be Roy Corley, Jr., Claude Corley, David Waits, Darren Beaver, Mike Long, Gus Manos, Pete Manos and Chris Mann. Honorary pallbearers will be the Adult Sunday School Class at Shiloh UMC and the Chester Nuts Camping Club. The family will greet friends from 6-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at the funeral home. Mr. Stockman, beloved husband of 49 years to Carlene M. Stockman, entered heaven on Sunday, April 27, 2014. Born in Columbia, he was a son of the late Dewey and Katie Stockman. He was a 1953 graduate of Irmo High School a proud veteran of the United States Navy, where he spent two years on Active duty with the Navy Seabees. He made two trips to Antarctica one was by ship the second was by air, he traveled around the world. He was a loyal member of Shiloh United Methodist Church and the Chester Nuts Camping Club; he loved his monthly camping trips. He worked as an Electrician since 1953 at several local companies before retiring from the Dorn VA Hospital after 20 years in maintenance and was the supervisor of the Electric Shop. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #382 of Gaston. Surviving in addition to his beloved wife, Carlene; their children, Jeffery Lee Stockman, Greg Cowell (Kelly), Glen Stockman, Susan Hollis (Glenn), Lisa Long (Mike) and Ann Stockman-Nicholson; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; brother, Donald Ray Stockman. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Harold Stockman, Pete Stockman, Bill Stockman, Vernon Stockman and sister, Bayce Wallace. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 546 Gardner's Terrace Road, West Columbia, SC 29172. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Gentiva Home Health and Compassionate Hospice who cared for him during his last days.
