Obituary of Harry Winford Upson

WEST COLUMBIA-Funeral service for Harry Winford Upson, 91, of West Columbia, will be held at 10 AM Thursday, May 8, 2014 at Grace Baptist Church, 416 Denham Ave, West Columbia, SC 29169. Pastor Bill Egerdahl will officiate. Burial will follow in Celestial Memorial Gardens, 3111 Delree Street, West Columbia, 29170. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 PM Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, 4720 Augusta Road, Lexington, SC 29073 Mr. Upson passed away on Monday, May 5, 2014. Born January 3, 1923 in New York City, New York, he a son of the late Harry W. and Emma Marie Voight Upson. He was a 1941 graduate of Central High School in Davenport, Iowa and in 1954, he attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church in West Columbia. Mr. Upson retired from the United States Army Weapons Command in Rock Island Arsenal, Illinois and was a veteran of the United States Navy. Surviving are his wife of 71 years, Juanita Ruth Grau Upson of West Columbia, sons, Jon A. Upson of Columbia, Jeffrey D. Upson of Mobile, AL; daughters, Jacklyn A. Kallenberger of Walcott, IA, and Heide W. Langston of Lawrenceville, GA; many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and a large and loving extended family including sisters-in-law, Bernice Grau of Wilton Junction, IL and Bonnie Freeze of Bennett, IA. Mr. Upson was predeceased by a son, David Lee Upson and a daughter, Deborah Lynn Stafford.
