Obituary of Joan Powell

COLUMBIA-Joan Powell, 75, of Columbia, SC passed away June 1, 2014 at her home with her family by her side. Born August 8, 1938 in Toledo, OH she was a daughter of the late Stanley S. Hernacki and Martha (Klosinska) Swigon. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the St. Joseph's Women's Society, and was also a volunteer for the Providence Hospital's Gift Shop. However, due to her illness, she had been unable to attend and volunteer for some time. Mrs. Powell had retired from Anchor Continental Tape Manufacturing where she had been a records clerk. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Powell, Sr.; son, Michael Powell; grandson, Charlie Beavers; and two brothers, Danny Klosinska and Jim Hernacki. Joan is survived by her sons, Robert Powell and John Powell, Jr.; daughters, Debbie Raines, Annette Powell, and an adopted daughter, T.J. Propst; sisters, Eleanor Craig, Delores Kamcza, Pat Shrewsberry and Diane Leach; brothers, Joe and Eugene Hernacki; grandchildren, Jackie Jernigan, Angela Perry, Kelsey Powell, Eric Jamison, Hollie Powell; five great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M., on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at Thompson Funeral Home at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, June 5, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 3600 Devine Street, Columbia, SC 29205. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
