Obituary of Furman L. Anderson

A graveside service for Furman L. Anderson Jr. will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, June 7, 2014 at Greenlawn Memorial Park. A visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Thompson Funeral Home at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209. On-line condolences may be sent to www.Thompsonsfuneral.com. God called home a faithful servant on Monday, June 2, 2014. Born June 6, 1926, in Columbia, S.C., he was the son of the late Furman and Ruth Bowers Anderson. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, where he discovered his engineering skills. He attended George Tech and the University of South Carolina and received a degree in structural engineering. He was employed by Kline Iron & Steel Tower Division, where he was part of a unique team that designed the tallest tower in the history of mankind back in the 60's and the landmark Sutro Tower in San Francisco. He later founded Anderson & Forman Engineering Consultants. Furman was a member of North Trenholm Baptist Church where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher and led the building committees on numerous construction projects. A loving husband of 59 years to Mildred Anderson. After her death in 2009, he moved to West Chester, PA and lived with his son and his family. Surviving are his son, James Anderson (Ginna), West Chester, PA; his daughters, Jan Moody of Columbia, SC and Joy Fiske (Chip), Augusta, GA; a brother Larry Anderson, Camden, SC; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth and James Anderson, Ashton Mundy (Matt), Kasey and Jamie Moody, Ray and Chiles Fiske; a great granddaughter, Raven. He was predeceased by his brother, Charles Anderson, a son, Roy Anderson, and his beloved wife, Mildred Anderson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association or donate your time to local Alzheimer's support groups in memory of Furman.
