Obituary of William Russell Shull

WEST COLUMBIA—William Russell "Bill" Shull, 82, of West Columbia, husband of Dorothy Turner "Dottie" Shull, died June 12, 2014 at Lexington Medical Center. Born January 17, 1932 in West Columbia, he was the son of the late Lawrence Russell Shull and Rae Roland Shull of West Columbia. He was a lifelong resident of the Cayce - West Columbia area. A graduate of Brookland-Cayce High School, Bill Shull was Student Body President, lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track, as well as earned his English Letter. He also played American Legion Baseball. After graduation from high school, he joined the United States Air Force. His squadron, the 110th from McEntire Air Force Base was deployed to Germany. When he returned home, he went into business with his father-in-law, Chick Turner, and brother-in-law, Sonny Turner, which later became known as Tri-City Fuel and Heating. He is a past president of Fuel Oil Dealers Association and a past president of HVAC - Heating and Air Conditioning Association. He retired as President and CEO after 60 years. He was a charter member of both Holland Avenue Baptist Church and Trinity Baptist Church, where he was a faithful member until his death. He was on the Board of Deacons for many years, serving as chairman. He was an Adult Sunday School Director and also served on many committees in the church. He was a member of the Senior Adult Men's Sunday School Class. There was nothing he loved more than serving his Lord through his church. Mr. Shull also served his community through the Cayce, West Columbia Lion's Club, and the Sinclair Lodge. He was an avid South Carolina Gamecock fan and a full scholarship donor for 47 consecutive years. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Dottie Turner Shull; son, Rick Shull; daughter-in-law, Melanie Shull both of West Columbia; grandson, Turner Shull and granddaughter, Madison Shull both of West Columbia; sister, Doris Allen of Charlotte, NC; sisters-in-law, Freda Ott of North Charleston and Patsy Turner of West Columbia; along with numerous nieces and nephews. There will be a visitation on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Trinity Baptist Church, 2003 Charleston Hwy., Cayce, SC 29033 from 10:00 a.m. until 12 noon in the foyer of the Worship Center. Burial will be private. Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, 200 State Street, West Columbia, SC 29169 is assisting the family. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Trinity Baptist Church, 2003 Charleston Hwy., Cayce, SC 29033.
