Obituary of Otis T. Wessinger

WEST COLUMBIA-Funeral services for Otis Theodore Wessinger, 96, of West Columbia, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 7, 2014 at Mt. Hermon Lutheran Church, 3011 Leaphart Road, West Columbia. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Road in Columbia. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, July 6, 2014, at Thompson Funeral Home Lexington, 4720 Augusta Road in Lexington. Pallbearers will be O'Neil Sessions, Ronnie Fulmer, Earl Sease, Jerry Richardson, Herb Bucknam and Robert Ferrell. Honorary pallbearers will be Mt. Hermon Members of Young at Heart. Otis passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2014. He was born October 5, 1917, to the late Burley Wessinger and Pearl V. Godfrey Wessinger. He worked for 47 years at Mt. Vernon Mill in Columbia. He loved fishing, camping, and working in his yard. He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Lena K. Wessinger; one son, Charles Wessinger (deceased) and his wife, Patricia; one daughter, Mary Lou Throneburg and her husband, Bill; one grandson, Bill Throneburg and his wife, Michelle; two granddaughters, Emily Wessinger and Deborah Newman; six great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and two nephews and a niece. A special thank you to Gloria Jean Oakley, O'Neil Sessions, and Jane B. Sexton for their loving care. Otis was deeply loved and will be missed by so many. Memorials may be made to the Building on Holy Ground Fund at Mt. Hermon Lutheran Church, 3011 Leaphart Road, West Columbia, SC 29169. Otis, you will be missed by your family and friends. The life you lived touched all who knew you. Your legacy imparted to those you leave behind is a testimony to the American dream. Work ethic, perseverance, and being fugal are living examples of what a man ought to be-a husband, father, patriarch and great friend. We look forward to meeting you again on those streets of gold in the presence of our Savior.
