Obituary of Charlie Leon Joy
Funeral services for Charlie Leon Joy, 83, of Lexington, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at Red Bank Baptist Church in Lexington. Burial will follow in Southland Memorial Gardens, 700 W. Dunbar Road in West Columbia. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, July 7, 2014 at Thompson Funeral Home Lexington, 4720 Augusta Road, Lexington, SC 29073. Active pallbearers will be Charlie's grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Freddie Powell Sunday School Class.
Charlie went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 5, 2014. He was born on January 26, 1931, in Roxie, Mississippi, to the late Lee Edward Joy and Bettie Worthey Joy. He was a retired mechanic working for several car dealerships and trucking companies. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served during the Korean Conflict. He retired after serving 22 years in the United States Army National Guard. He was a member of Red Bank Baptist Church and had retired from U.S. Army National Guard.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Nan Horton Joy of Lexington; sons, Leon "Lucky" Joy (Janet) of N. Augusta, and Freddie Joy (Robin) of Lexington; four grandchildren, Stanton Chapman, Nathan Joy (Christine), Justin Joy (Jessica), Marianne Joy Williamson (Edwin); and six great-grandchildren, Sara, Bryson, Kayleigh, Kamryn, Aubrey and Kassie.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Alma Guice and Hazel Morris and four brothers, Walter, William, Harvey and Jessie Joy.
