Obituary of Joel E. Peavy

COLUMBIA—Joel Peavy, 72, passed away on Monday, July 14, 2014 at WJB Dorn VA Hospital in Columbia, SC. Joel was born on March 13, 1942 in Columbia, SC to Joel E. Peavy, Sr. and Lorie Busby Peavy. Joel grew up in Columbia, SC; he graduated from Eau Claire High School in Columbia in 1961. After high school he joined the United States Marines in 1961 and served 8 years, during the Vietnam war and was the recipient of the Navy Commendation Medal. Joel began work in construction/repairs. He was still doing the repairs at several local carwashes at the time of his sickness. Joel married Mary Jane Adkins Peavy on February 23, 1985 in Columbia, SC. They were happily married for 29 years. Joel was a member of Loyal Order of Moose, Cayce Lodge #462, Swamp Fox Moose Legion #74, American Masonic Lodge Post #0174 and Cayce Masonic Lodge #384. Joel is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Peavy of Columbia; sons, Paul F. Peavy (Patti) of Columbia, SC and John W. Peavy (Brenda) of Lexington; daughter, Constance Marie Peavy of Gaston; sister, Brenda Helms-Thompson of Mauldin, SC; Joel is survived by 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and 4-four legged friends, Smokey, Maria, Speckles and Rocky that will miss him dearly, and many friends who will miss him greatly. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 18, 2014 at Thompson Funeral Home, 200 State Street, West Columbia, SC 29169. The Reverend Steve Kitrell will officiate. Burial will follow in Southland Memorial Gardens, West Columbia, SC. A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2014 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Moose International, 155 S. International Drive, Mooseheart, Illinois 60539-1100.
