Obituary of George Daniel Raines

SWANSEA—George Daniel "Dan" Raines, 66, of Swansea, SC, passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2014, with his family by his side. Dan was born in Columbia, South Carolina on January 18, 1948, to the late George Bunch Raines and Ann Douglas Raines. He is survived by his brother Preston Raines (Cathy), and sisters Maria Threat (Larry) and Kathy Graham (Jeff). Dan has three daughters, Susan Raines, Donna Raines and Kimberly Raines. He also has five grandchildren. He also has a host of extended family and friends, to include Dorothy Cooper who stayed by his side. Dan served in the Army in the Vietnam War from 1967 - 1969. Upon return he picked up where he left off. Dan was an electrician his entire life and never met a stranger. He worked for Gregory Electric for many years before moving on to Brock Electric. Later Dan opened his own business and became well known throughout the community for his talents and integrity. His work allowed him to travel across the United States and even overseas. His gift was having a huge heart and wanting to help others. He told of many stories of encounters of helping others. He also loved to dance, specifically the Shag. He was an exceptional dancer and won many awards. He made many a trip to the Carolina coast to participate in Shag contests and festivals. His last visit was New Years' Eve. Dan also had a love of horses and for his old Labrador, Duke. Dan was fascinated with restoring older cars. That, too, was one of his former passions. Dan was all about living life to the fullest and enjoying each and every moment. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Caring House, 2625 Pickett Rd, Durham, NC 27705. A viewing will be held at 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. on Friday, July 18, at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, 200 State Street, West Columbia, SC 29169. The service will be held at 11:00 a.m., at Sandy Level Baptist Church, 408 Blythewood Road, Blythewood, SC 29016, Saturday, July 19, 2014, with burial in the church cemetery with military honors.
