Krysta and other family members,
I just saw Russ's obituary and am sad and shocked. I knew Russ slightly in psych grad school at U of Alabama. I got to know him when working with him at the Cheaha Mental Health Ctr. Krysta, you may remember visiting Savannah when Russ worked in Beaufort - I had come up from Florida and Don And Pearl Brown came from Alabama. I can't remember what brought us non South Carolinians to Savannah, but we all spent a day together touristing. That was the last time I saw Russ (early 1980s). We had gotten back in touch a couple of years ago for a brief time. I was very sad to come across his obituary and sincere sympathies on your loss. I have very fond memories of Russ from our work and group get-togethers in Sylacauga.

Dear Laura,Krista and your Families,
My condolences to you all. The service was poignant and comforting. Russ's cousin and Krista informed us of aspects of his life which rounded out what I knew of him.
I first met Russ at Coastal Empire Mental Health Center in Beaufort during a turbulent period for the center. Russ quickly became known for his ability to soothe ruffled feathers. He brought a breath of fresh air to us all. His steady, even approach coupled with his sense of humor eased the transition into his directorship from what had been years of chaos.
When Russ left Beaufort for the job at the Palace (DMH) we knew just how much he had brought to Coastal Empire. Not long after that I moved to Columbia and Russ and Jerome Hanley helped me get situated in my new home- I knew no one Columbia.
Over the years I would see Russ briefly at the Department. After becoming a Nurse Practitioner I sought a position at Bryan Psych Hospital 1999. Russ was the person who hired me, though he poked fun at me about having bought a new suit for the official interview. I told him the new suit was in his honor. We both chuckled. It was a big transition for me to work in a hospital and I often sought Russ out- his door was always open. Apparently he could see the frustration in my face and would proceed with a slow detailed explanation of whatever the situation and my frustration would dissipate. Same thing he did in Beaufort and for many others in DMH.
I know that you all will miss him tremendously. I am so sorry he is gone, and know that though his legacy he will be remembered with love.
Sincerely,
Maria Madeo

Laura,
Russ co-signed some of my psychological evaluations early in my career, at Cheaha MHC in AL, and I was one of the "Alabama Mafia" he brought to Coastal Empire MHC. I'd have never met my wife, Maria Madeo, if it weren't for Russ. (We attended his service today.) He was at the helm of Bryan Hospital when I joined the psychology staff, and I can attest to both his administrative skills and his warm humanity. He was accessible to all and no subsequent Director had his vision or applied compassion for consumers. I was fortunate to have known him. I wish you Grace in this time of loss.

Laura,
Our hearts are broken. The Church of the Cross has lost one of its pillars. We celebrate the time Russ was with us and all he did for the Church. His wise counsel and advice was heaven sent and we were blessed to have had him as one of our own. RIP, Russ.

Gone way too soon! Russ' gifts of heart, humor and commitment to all those who were lucky enough to share his world will be greatly missed. To his loved ones we extend our deepest sympathy. Know that we are here for you. Reflect....rejuvenate....redirect... as Russ would have wanted, but in your own time. We are all better people for having known him. The Christiano Family
