Obituary of Myrtis Elizabeth Owens

WEST COLUMBIA-A memorial service for Myrtis Elizabeth Owens, 83, of West Columbia, will be held at 1:00 PM Sunday, August 24, 2014 in the chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. A private family burial in Blackville Cemetery will be held at a later date. Myrtis was a loving daughter, sister, aunt and friend who will be lovingly remembered. She proudly served her country in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army, and had retired after a successful career with the SC Department of Highways and Public Transportation. Myrtis also volunteered with the SC Department of Mental Health, and was a long time member of Northside Baptist Church, where she led several groups in the Girls' Auxiliary. She enjoyed traveling in her RV, meeting new people, and will be remembered for her sense of fun and loyalty. She was an avid gardener who loved her pets. She is survived by her niece, Dorcas Shurberg (Jonathan) of The Plains, VA; nephews, Chris Owens (Nancy), Scott Owens (Teresa), and Bill Owens, all of Blackville, SC, Ted O. Neuenschwander; Stephan Neuenschwander (Mindy McGinnis) of Raleigh, NC and many great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Joanne Owens of Blackville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Humane Society, 121 Humane Lane, Columbia, SC 29209.
