Obituary of Lillian Virginia Taylor Hartley

Columbia, SC A funeral service celebrating the life of Lillian Virginia Taylor Hartley will be held at 9:00 A.M. Saturday, September 6, 2014 at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be made to the ALS SC Chapter, P. O. Lillian Virginia Taylor Hartley, 87, passed away September 2, 2014 after a brief illness. A resident of Columbia, SC, she was born February 19, 1927 in Baltimore, MD to the late Rupert Earl Taylor, Sr. and the late Florence Emma Face Taylor. Lillian was married to the late Mahlon Hartley, Sr. and moved with him during his years of service in the Navy before settling in Columbia. She learned to appreciate the different cultures of the many places where they were stationed. She loved reminiscing about where she had been, what she had seen and what she had experienced. As her children grew, she turned a love of creating ceramics into a business with E & L Ceramics. Even after 'retiring', she continued to produce unique creations for her family and close friends. She is survived by her son, Mahlon "Skip" Hartley, Jr., her brother, Rupert Earl Taylor, Jr. (Bonnie), her grandchildren, Lindsay Hartley McCutcheon (Joseph), Stephen Britt (Amy), her daughter-in-law, Kathy Winn Hartley, and her great-grandchildren, Carson William and Reid Hartley McCutcheon and Hunter Britt as well as many nieces and nephews. She was known by many names…Lillian, Jenny, Aunt Jenny, Grandmom and MeeMaw. Each was special to her as those who used them. In addition to her parents and husband, Lillian was predeceased by her daughter Cheryle, her son Larry, her sisters Bonnie Gracey and Doris Miller as well as her grandchildren Mahlon "Trey" Hartley, III and Melanie Hartley.
