Obituary of Pearl Soles Capps Gardner Mitchell

Columbia- Mrs. Pearl Soles Capps Gardner Mitchell died peacefully at home on Friday, September 12, 2014. She was born in Horry County, the daughter of the late Cornealous S. and Addie Mae Powell Soles, but had made her home in Columbia since 1969. Mrs. Mitchell was predeceased by husbands, George W. Capps of Conway, SC, James T. Gardner, of Columbia, SC and James E. Mitchell of Columbia, SC. She was also predeceased by all of her siblings; and two daughters and their husbands, Betty C. and L. Edward King of Columbia and Kathleen (Kathy) and Winfred Jollie of Surfside Beach. Survivors include two daughters, Martha (James) Fleming of Tucker, GA and Jean (Jency) Kelly of Titusville, FL; grandchildren, Jimmy (Candy) Fleming of Dacula, GA, Keith (Julia) Fleming of Dacula, GA, Cheryl Jollie (Ed Haynsworth) of Columbia, SC, Melissa (Skip) Pierce of Myrtle Beach, SC, Russell (Suzanne) King of Lexington, SC, Susan (Dale) Harding of Lexington, SC, Tracy (Henry) Lesky of Mims, FL and Kim (Jeff) Fulton of Savannah, GA; 17 great-grandchildren; nieces, Marie (Monty) Montalbano of Sumter, SC and Hazel Grimes of Cross, SC. Mrs. Mitchell retired from Olan Mills Studios in 1979 as senior sales representative, where she enjoyed helping her customers choose family photos. She was a member of State Street Baptist Church, Cayce, SC for more than 40 years, and was an active member of Full of Hope Sunday School Class until her health prevented her attendance. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed planting various flowers and encouraging them to grow and bloom to their fullest. She was featured in The State Newspaper's Grow It section on August 9, 2009, where she talked about the therapy she received from gardening. A special "thank you" to granddaughter, Cheryl for the special attention she gave her grandmother and to caregivers Barbara McDowell and Peggy Mishoe for the loving care they gave to Mrs. Mitchell for more than eight years. A celebration of life will be held at 10:00a.m. Monday, September 15, 2014 at State Street Baptist Church, Cayce, with Dr. Pete Cassidy, Rev. Nathan Brown and Dr. Dalton Ward officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 14, 2014. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Mrs. Mitchell's honor to State Street Baptist Church, 1420 State Street, Cayce, SC 29033.
