Obituary of William Saville Lackland

West Columbia - William Saville Lackland was honored for his accomplishments in pharmacy by the State newspaper. The article was entitled "The Right Touch." William had the right touch in every aspect of his life. We honor and celebrate William Lackland 1929 - 2014. William held a doctoral degree in pharmacy from the University of SC. He achieved his preliminary studies from Duke University. He earned his undergraduate degree from North Georgia College. His professional career spanned more than 50 years. Upon graduation from the University Of South Carolina School Of Pharmacy in 1959, he joined the family business, Parkland Pharmacy, partnering with his brother Thomas Cobbs Lackland, Jr. William Lackland held the position of Pharmacist in Charge, General Manager and Executive Vice President of the Corporation. William was known for his honesty and ethics. He possessed moral integrity, character and a deep appreciation for his profession. Only his faith in God and his love of his family came ahead of pharmacy and his mission to help his fellow man. William (Bill) was a member and served as a deacon of The First Presbyterian Church of Columbia. He was a member of the Fifth District Pharmaceutical Association and the SC Pharmaceutical Association. He was a member of the Cayce-West Columbia Chamber of Commerce and on the board of directors. He held the position of The Chairman of the Health Committee of Lexington County Higher Education. He was a member, Vice President and President of the Cayce - West Columbia Kiwanis Club. He also served as Diabetes Chairman of the Ames Laboratories and was a nominee of the prestigious Bowl of Hygeia Award. Upon recommendation by the College of Pharmacy faculty and provost of the University of SC, William was appointed as an adjunct instructor in the College of Pharmacy. William was a United States veteran and served in the US Navy. He was also a 33 degree Mason. William was dedicated supporter and life time member of the USC Alumni Association. William Lackland was born in Atlanta, Georgia and his family later established in Albany, GA. William is the son of the late Thomas Cobbs Lackland and Margaret Saville Lackland. His late siblings are Thomas Cobbs Lackland, Jr. of Cayce, SC and Lillian Lackland Sullivan of Albany, Ga . William Lackland was married to Elena Lackland formally of New England and their devotion held them together for nearly 60 years. They have three children, Pamela Nancy Lackland of West Columbia, SC, Paige Lackland Rabon of Aiken, SC and Richard Saville Lackland of Atlanta, GA. Mrs. Rabon is married to Mr. Rodney Rabon and they are the parents of six children. A visitation will be held on Friday September 26th at Thompson Funeral Home in Cayce from 5-7 p.m. in the evening. The family will receive guests in their home from 7-9 pm. Services will be held at first Presbyterian Church on Saturday September 27 at 11 am in the main Sanctuary. A reception honoring William will be held immediately following in Jackson Hall. A grave side service will follow at Historic Elmwood Cemetery.
