Obituary of Sara White

Sara Louise (DeHart) White, 92, of Columbia, entered rest Sunday, October 5, 2014 at HarborChase Assisted Living and Memory Care. Born Friday, August 25, 1922 in Newberry County, SC she was a daughter of the late Daniel Jacob and Elouise (Werts) DeHart. She was a founding member of Temple Baptist Church and was involved in many activities within the church. She had also been an active member of NARFE (National Assoc. of Retired Federal Employees) for many years. Mrs. White was devoted to her family and after she retired from teaching she spent most of her time caring for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She knew her way around the kitchen, and enjoyed cooking as well as baking, but she also spent her time playing Bridge, reading and cross-stitching. In addition to her parents, Mrs. White was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil John White, with whom she shared a devoted and blessed union of more than 60 years; six brothers and one sister. She is survived by her sons, John Stephen White, Sr., and Roger Mayes White; sister, Mary Jane (DeHart) Osborne (Mrs. Kelly F. Osborne); daughter-in-law, Nora Claytor; sister in law, Daphne Sturgeon DeHart; three grandchildren, Carrie Carr McMahon, Christina White Hicks Jones and John Stephen White, Jr.; four great grandchildren, Sara Julia White Hicks, Colin Bailey Jones, Dylan Stephen White and AnnaBeth Reese Jones; as well as a number of loving nieces, nephews and their families. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 P.M. (Noon), on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at Thompson Funeral Home at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209. Interment will be private and held at a later time. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 3223 Sunset Blvd, #100, West Columbia, SC 29169.
