Obituary of Betty Costner Mitchum

WEST COLUMBIA - A funeral service for Betty Costner Mitchum, 88, of West Columbia, will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 11, 2014 at the Chapel of Hope Mausoleum Chapel at Southland Memorial Gardens. Rev. Charles Wilson will officiate. The family will greet friends 1 hour prior to the service at the Chapel of Hope. Mrs. Mitchum passed away peacefully in her sleep Wednesday, October 8, 2014. Born in Shelby, NC, she was a daughter of the late Hamilton J. and Mary "Mollie" Beam Costner. Betty was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister who devoted her life to her family and her faith. She was a charter member of Holland Avenue Baptist Church, who had lived in West Columbia for most of her married life. Mrs. Mitchum is survived by her sons, Robert C Mitchum (Sherry) of Lexington, Kennie Mitchum (Sharon) of West Columbia; 4 grandchildren, Amy Sharpe (Chuck), Jake Mitchum, Allen Mitchum (Kerry), Joy Jacob (Ricky); 6 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Mildred Cornwell (Hugh) of Forest City, NC. Betty was predeceased by her loving husband of 58 years, R.Watson Mitchum; a son, Michael H. Mitchum; a sister, Shirley Goodwin; and a brother, Ned Costner. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Agape Nursing and Hospice for their devoted care of Betty for the past two years.
