Obituary of Don Avery Lucas

Funeral services for Don Avery Lucas, 72, of Lexington will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, October 19, 2014 at Bethel United Methodist Church, 811 Peachtree Rock Road, with interment in the church cemetery with military honors. Pastor Kathryn W. Scarborough will officiate. Serving as pallbearers will be Jodie Creech, Chuck Lucas, Chris Arant, Brandon Arant, Frank Hutto, Trevor Hutto, Scotty Anderson and Charles Francis. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday, October 18, 2014 Thompson Funeral Home, 200 State Street, West Columbia, SC. Other visitation times will be held at 316 Shetland Lane, Lexington, SC. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210 or Bethel United Methodist Church, 278 Pen Branch Road, North, SC 29112. Mr. Lucas died at his residence on October 16, 2014. He was born in Blackville, SC on February 25, 1942. He was the son of the late Mary Dyches Lucas and the late A.T. Lucas, Jr. After graduating from Blackville High School, he enlisted in the US Air Force. Then, he worked for Columbia Commercial College for 16 years and retired from Olan Mills after 26 years of service. A passionate Christian and active church member, the deceased loved deer hunting, bass fishing and building things. He had a very special brother-in-law and hunting & fishing buddy, Bubba Arant, whom he considered a brother and loved very much. Mr. Lucas is survived by his wife, Jean Griffin Lucas of the home; two daughters, Lauren Joy Lucas of the home, and Kimberly (Tim) Burnett of Lexington, SC; two sons, David Aaron Lucas of Charleston, SC and Don Lucas, Jr. of Lake Murray; his step-daughter, Kathy (Scotty) Anderson, and step-son, Charles Francis, both of Opp, Alabama; his sister, Carol (Glen) Creech; his brother, Charles Lucas; two half-sisters, Gwen (Buck) Jeffcoat and Marsha Wingard; one half-brother, Tee Lucas; eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his half-brother, Tommy Lucas. The family would like to thank Compassionate Care Hospice and the 7th Floor of Lexington Medical Center; all the nurses, aides, doctors and anyone who had a hand in helping and caring for our loved one. The deceased has asked for everyone to wear bright clothing and rejoice.
