Obituary of Milton F. McElveen

Lexington - Milton F. "Jay" McElveen, Jr., 67, passed away on Friday, October 31, 2014. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 2, 2014 at Lexington Baptist Church, 308 E. Main Street, Lexington, SC. Burial will follow in Celestial Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Honorary pallbearers will be the McElveen/Toomey Sunday school class. Milton "Jay" McElveen, Jr. was born in Florence County on October 10, 1947 to the late Milton "Mac" and Dottie Hatchel McElveen. He began working with The SC Highway Department in 1969 and retired from the SC Department of Public Safety in 2006. His first love was for Jesus Christ, second was his family, and third was his country and the Clemson Tigers. He also enjoyed performing and writing music. He was a graduate of Conway High School and the University of South Carolina. He was a former member of Temple Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and a Sunday school teacher before moving to Lexington where he joined Lexington Baptist Church. He was in the church choir, Lexington prison ministry and a Sunday school teacher. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sylvia McCracken McElveen; his daughter, Teena and husband, David Lankford and his granddaughter, Jade Lankford, who knew him as "Papa". In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lexington Baptist Prison Ministry or Backpack Ministry at 308 E. Main Street, Lexington, South Carolina 29072.
