Obituary of William Edward Broome

West Columbia - William Edward Broome, 91, passed away on Tuesday, November 18, 2014. He was born on April 6, 1923 to the late Viola Mabel and Silas Hampton Broome. Bill attended Logan Elementary, Wardlaw Jr. High and graduated from Columbia High in 1942. He worked a brief time for W.B. Guimarin Plumbing and Heating before joining the US Navy in November 1942, serving until his discharge on December 24, 1945 as an Aviation Machinist Mate First Class. In 1944 he married Evelyn "Dolly" Carter from Eau Gallie, Florida. In 1950, he moved to Eau Gallie, where he operated his own plumbing business for 13 years. During these years, he served on the Eau Gallie City Council. He was a Sunday school teacher and a Deacon in his church. He was also a member of the Masons, Shriners and was very active in his community. From 1966 until 1968, he co-owned a grocery store in Atlanta, Georgia with his brother-in-law, W.H. Carter, before returning to Columbia, South Carolina with his family. Bill and Dolly reared four children, Dr. William Broome (Sonja), Terry Broome (Liz), Dale Broome (Fran) and Jodie Adams (Craig). He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a brother, Frank Broome. He was pre-deceased by a brother, Jack Broome. Bill continued working in the plumbing business for Walker Plumbing and Heating in Columbia and Dupont in Camden. He traveled the U.S. working in various nuclear power plants from California to South Carolina until retiring in the late 1980's. After retiring from his plumbing career, he worked part-time as a bailiff for Richland County Courthouse in Columbia, SC. For 14 years until his retirement at the age of 89. After the death of his wife, and a working career of 60 years, Bill married Jo Ann Rogers Broome. They have been married for 15 years and enjoyed traveling and being involved with family. He was active member at Northside Baptist Church in Lexington and they made their home in West Columbia, South Carolina. Bill was loved by all his family, relatives and friends, and will be greatly missed. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 21, 2014 at The Chapel at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, 4720 Augusta Road, Lexington, South Carolina and burial will follow in Woodridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Connie Maxwell Children's Home, 810 Maxwell Ave, Greenwood, South Carolina 29646; Mission Columbia, in care of Northside Baptist Church, 4347 Sunset Blvd., Lexington, SC 29072; or a charity of your choice.
