Obituary of Lloyd James Coates

West Columbia - Lloyd James Coates, 79, of West Columbia, passed away on Friday, November 21, 2014. Born in Horry County on January 4, 1935, he was the son of the late Bertha Mae Huggins and David Hampton Coates. A member of West Columbia First Church of the Nazarene, Lloyd retired from Owen Steel Company. He was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother who never met a stranger, enjoyed small engine repair, country music and watching old western movies. Lloyd is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Johnnie Mae Coates; daughters, Patricia Eargle of West Columbia, Peggy Williams (Don) of Gaston and Tenny Rea (Tim) of Lexington; sisters, Lorene Ford of Camden, Carolyn Williams of West Columbia and Pauline Johnson; brothers, Charles Huggins and Bennie Coates; grandchildren, Felicia Williams, Ashley Baughman (B.J.), Vickie Hagins (Wayne) and Priscilla Hilbert (Jason); and great-grandchildren, Victoria, Mark, Austin, Alexia, R.J., Albany, Kaitlyn and Kelsey. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Lloyd James Coates, Jr.; two infant daughters; son-in-law, Paul Eargle; five sisters and 5 brothers. Funeral service for Mr. Coates will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 24, 2014 at First Church of the Nazarene, West Columbia, 350 Wattling Road, West Columbia, SC. Pastor Bill Harmon will officiate. Burial will follow in Gibson Cemetery, 3155 Delree Street, West Columbia, SC. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 23, 2014 at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, 4720 Augusta Road, Lexington, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to West Columbia First Church of the Nazarene.
