Obituary of George Andrew Smyser

Hopkins - George Andrew Smyser, Jr, 68, of Hopkins, South Carolina passed away December 18, 2014 at Palmetto Health Richland Columbia, South Carolina. He was born on April 21, 1946 in Columbia, South Carolina to the late George and Virginia Smyser, Sr. George was a proud US Air Force veteran with service in Korea as a mechanic. He worked for Ryder Truck Rental for 17 years before retiring. George was an ingenious man and could fix anything. He was a Christian man with a strong work ethic that he passed on to his children and was a long time member of Shandon United Methodist Church. A dedicated husband, very involved father and grandfather, a Boy Scout leader, and a volunteer band parent, George most loved his family, doing all he could for the family he loved. George is survived by his devoted wife, Mary R. Smyser; and his children, George Andrew Smyser, III (Sharon), Mary Diane Smyser, and John Paul Smyser (Rita). He is also survived by four grandchildren. Graveside services will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 7100 Garners Ferry Rd, Columbia SC 29209 on Monday, December 22, 2014 at 4:00 PM with FUNERAL CLERGY officiating. The family will receive friends one hour after the service at Thompsons Funeral Home at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Rd. Columbia, SC 29209 Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718; The Lupus Foundation of America, PO Box 96864, Washington, DC 20090; the American Heart Association, 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX 75231; or to the charity of one's choice.
