I first met Eunice Medhurst in 1958 when I entered Columbia Hospital School of Nursing as a freshman nursing student. She became a wonderful mentor and friend to me after nursing school and throughout the years since. She was a wonderful example for many who met her through her nursing years. She left and will continue to leave a great legacy through those whom she taught, mentored, and with whom she worked. It was a privilege to know such a wonderful person.
May God grant all of you as family His peace and comfort.
Love, Edith Joye Watson

The South Carolina Nurses Association mourns the loss of past President, Eunice R. Medhurst. Mrs. Medhurst was an inspiration to all who knew her and a nurse's nurse. Mrs. Medhurst will be honored at both the American Nurses Association annual meeting in July and the SCNA annual meeting in October as part of our ceremony known as "She Was There". The SCNA sends it wishes for happy memories to all the members of Mrs. Medhurst's family. May the warmth and joy of your memories warm you at this time of loss.

One of the high memories Aunt Eunice was fond of relating in her later years was the way that she got into nursing. It is included below:
She entered Nursing School at the Columbia Hospital on 6 September 1932 and graduated in the class of 1935. During the first portion of her training as a nurse, Eunice became homesick and wrote home for her brothers to come get her. This was over the Labor Day weekend. Her roommate Catherine Gary pressed her to go with her to vespers and Dr. James W. Jackson (the minister) "aimed the sermon right at her". You have to get over the barriers. Eunice's barrier was homesickness and she subsequently had a change of heart. So she sent home a card that said "I'm staying". Both arrived at the David Rish home at the same time and her sister Iceoline received them - read them - and put them in the stove to burn without telling her parents.
