Mrs. Barnes died on February 23, 2015 after an extended illness. Born on April 20, 1927 in Bishopville, SC, she was the daughter of the late Hodges Alexander Moore and Adelaide Free Moore. She graduated from Bishopville High School in 1945, where she was Valedictorian of her senior class. Soon after graduation, she married her beloved husband, Willard Barnes. They were married for 63 years before he passed away in 2008. Throughout Willard's long career with Railway Express Agency, he and Anne, and their young family, lived in many cities including Walterboro, Charleston, Darlington, Sumter, New Bern, NC, Florence, and Knoxville, TN, before moving to Columbia in 1963. They remained in Columbia for the rest of their lives. In 1989, Mrs. Barnes retired from J.B. White Department Store at Richland Mall, where she was a sales associate for 25 years in the Children's Department. The greatest joy of her life was the closeness of her family around her. Additionally, she cherished her friends, especially her fellow church members and neighbors at The Laureate. She enjoyed so much their frequent visits. A member of Shandon Baptist Church for the past 52 years, Mrs. Barnes was a member of the JOY Class. She taught the 4-year-old Sunday school class for many years. She also served with the Homebound Outreach Program and in the church's Prayer Room. Over the years, she was a loyal supporter and active volunteer with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Surviving are her three sons and two daughters-in-law, Buddy and Lynn Barnes, of Chapin, Terry and Dianne Barnes of Columbia, and Tony Barnes, also of Columbia; three grandchildren, Lisa Evans and her husband, Bryan, of Chapin, Ryan Barnes and his wife, Amber, of Columbia, and Caroline Barnes of Columbia; two great-grandchildren, Catherine and Andrew Evans of Chapin; and, one cousin, Sara Reames Dukes of Marion, SC. The family would like to thank their mother's caregivers, including long-time special friend, Mary Sims, as well as Delores Nelson and Jackie Spry with Comfort Keepers, for their dedication and wonderful loving support.
