Obituary of Lawanda Nancy Stewart-Hewitt

Lawanda Nancy Stewart Hewitt, beloved wife of Ronald Hewitt entered into rest on February 28, 2015. Lawanda was born January 23, 1940 in Bridgeport, CT, to the late Louise and Arthur Stewart. She was a graduate of Harding High School and received her Bachelors Degree in Science from Quinnepiac University. Lawanda was employed with Action for Bridgeport Community Development, Bridgeport, CT for over 20 years, and was also employed at the Columbus House, in New Haven, CT. She was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. Lawanda was proud of her Native American Shinnecock heritage, and that she was a hereditary descendent of Chief Wyandance of Long Island, NY, who was a Chief during the 1600's. She was a member of the Black Business and Professional Club and American Indians for Development, Meriden, CT. She participated in the 1964 Civil Rights March in Washington, DC, and also participated in the March for the Homeless 1990 in Washington, DC. Lawanda is survived by her husband, Ronald, of Columbia; daughter, Jacqueline Hewitt, Lane, SC; sons, Andel Martinez, of Columbia, Ronald and Stephen Martinez, West Haven, CT; brother, Alfred Stewart (Jenny), Bridgeport, CT; sisters, Carol Stewart Davis (Tommy), Blakeslee, PA, and Sandra Stewart Barnett (Roosevelt), of Stratford, CT; nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Also surviving is an aunt, Jessie Stewart Brown, Blakeslee, PA, and a special cousin, Robert G. Stewart (Chief Little Eagle) Maryland, NY. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Gloria and Jocelyn as well as two brothers, Ronald and Arthur. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Laurel Hill Family Cemetery, Long Island, NY.
