Obituary of Stella J. Hawkins

Stella Jo Hawkins, AKA Hawkie, 86, of Columbia, SC passed away peacefully at her home on March 15, 2015. Stella was born on May 20, 1927, in Bristol VA to the late Jessie Barker and Bessie (Clayman) Barker. Stella was a military wife and spent time traveling when she was young. She spent the majority of her life taking care of children either in her own Childcare Center or working for others. She had a wonderful sense of humor with a very quick wit. Stella was truly dedicated to her family and loved to spoil her children and grandchildren. She was a wonderful mom and fantastic grandmother, always there with love and support. Her breakfast gravy was a family favorite. She especially enjoyed the Christmas season where Stella would cook, spend time with family and buy way too many gifts. Stella was truly one of a kind. Stella is survived by her daughters; Gina Mattioli (Tony) of Columbia, SC, Suzette Scaturo of Batesburg SC, Yvonne Asmer (Pete) of Columbia, SC, a son: Thomas Hawkins (Ann) of Hopkins SC, grandchildren; Ali Myers (Don) of Graham WA, Kendel Ashe (Douglas) of Murrells Inlet, SC, Mia Asmer, of Greenville SC, Tara Asmer of Columbia, SC, Leah Pool, of Batesburg, SC, great grandchildren, Aubrey Myers, Alex Myers, Ashton Myers, Will Roghelia and Mason Ashe. She is also survived by her brother Eddie Barker (Mary) of Bristol VA. She was predeceased by her husband, Major Thomas H Hawkins, brothers; Fred Barker, Ray Barker and Charles Barker. The family will receive friends at Thompson Funeral Home at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209 on Monday, March 23, 2015 from 6 PM until 8 PM. She will be laid to rest in Bristol, VA in a private ceremony.
