Obituary of Basil McGirt

Basil "Mac" McGirt, age 79, died on April 7, 2015 at Heartland of Lexington Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Born in Barnwell and raised in Columbia, Mac was the son of the late Basil Manly Jenkins and Mary Walker Jenkins and the stepson of Lawrence McGirt. Mac was a proud graduate of Clemson University and became an accomplished and successful civil engineer. After retiring from Republic Contracting Corporation, Mac and Jayne, his beloved wife of 53 years, enjoyed many years of traveling around the world. In addition to his wife, Mac is survived by his son, Douglas Lawrence McGirt (Anita); daughter, Amy McGirt Hein (Pete); two grandsons, Douglas and Dylan McGirt; sister-in-law, Sophia Blanchard; and two brothers, Jay McGirt of Orlando, Florida and Jaye Jenkins of Goodrich, Michigan. Mac will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and his much loved pets Marley, Callie, and Zan. A memorial service will be held 12:00 PM Friday, April 10, 2015 at Thompson Funeral Home at Greenlawn Memorial Park Chapel. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until 11:45 AM prior to the service at the funeral home. The family would like to thank the staff of Heartland of Lexington for their care and compassion during this difficult time.
