Obituary of Benny Bryce Gunter

Benny Bryce Gunter, 73 of Gaston, SC departed from this earthly body and went to his heavenly home on April 16, 2015 while surrounded by family and friends. Benny was born in Aiken, SC on October 23, 1941, to the late Bryce Marion Gunter and Virginia Grandy Gunter. A graduate of Brookland-Cayce High School and Midlands Technical College, he enjoyed a long career of 36 years with the University of South Carolina. After his retirement in 2004, he began his own business, Select Construction and Management, a general contracting corporation. He always had an ongoing project and loved hard work. Benny married his lifelong love, Bonnie Pound Gunter, in 1961. They enjoyed the blessing of a beautiful marriage for 53 years in which their love grew through life's changing stages. A former church deacon, Benny was a member of Harmony Baptist Church. He had a deep and abiding faith that never wavered. He openly spoke about going to meet his heavenly father. Benny's life was dedicated to serving our Lord. Benny will be remembered for his passion for life. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed shrimping off the SC coast with his best fishing pal Morris Nussbaum, always sharing his catch with others. Among the many recreational activities he enjoyed were snow skiing, water skiing, camping and building houses. He was a racing enthusiast, racing go-carts, motorcycles, and stock cars during his younger years. During the latter years, he relished the time spent with his 3 grandsons, teaching them all the things little boys should know. His life was lived to the fullest. The zeal with which he experienced each new day will be missed by his loving family. He leaves to cherish his memory Bonnie Gunter, wife of Gaston, SC; daughter, Dr. Mechelle Moody (James) of Donalsonville, GA; three grandsons, Will Moody, Walt Moody and Wes Moody; brothers, Ronny Gunter (Ann), Stephen Gunter (Cathy); sister, Marilyn Knight (Butch); nephews, Clent Gunter (Tammy), Caleb Gunter, Shawn Gunter, Christopher Knight (Stephanie), Troy Pound (Tracy), Kristopher Pound (Brooke), Shawn Pound (Shellie); nieces, Sonya Christine Gunter, Melissa Harmon (Brian), and Ginger Moore (Brad); Godson, Benjamin Wells. He also leaves behind his dear friend, Robert Wells (Carol). He was preceded in death by his parents, Bryce and Virginia Gunter and by his daughter, Sonja Collette Gunter. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7PM Saturday evening at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, 4720 Augusta Road, Lexington. Funeral Services will be held at 2:30 pm Sunday, April 19, 2015, at Harmony Baptist Church, 1959 Woodtrail Drive, Gaston, SC 29053. Interment will follow in Southland Memorial Gardens.
