Obituary of Alfred Dallas Greenwold

Alfred Dallas Greenwold, 90, husband of the late Mary Elizabeth Ford Greenwold, passed away Monday, April 20, 2015. Born in Chicago, Illinois to the late Alfred H. Greenwold and Agnes Marie Dallas Greenwold Shute, he was a veteran of the US Army and earned a purple heart while serving in World War II. Alfred was a longtime resident of Columbia, South Carolina and the Sandy Run Community. He was most recently living in Greenville, South Carolina. Alfred was a business owner and worked for many years as an accountant in the corporate iron and steel industry. He also briefly worked for the State of South Carolina before retiring. The Catholic Faith was a very important part of Alfred's life and he was very active in his church. For many years he was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church in Columbia, South Carolina. Most recently, he was a member of St. Mary Madeline's Catholic Church in Greenville, South Carolina. He was a member of The Knights of Columbus and The American Legion. Upon his retirement he loved doing volunteer work through the Church and at Providence Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina. Some of Alfred's hobbies included woodworking and gardening, but he had a special love for history and writing. He also enjoyed playing the piano and writing music. The loves of Alfred's life were his wife, Mary, who predeceased him in death after 65 years of marriage and his surviving four sons, Edward Dallas Greenwold (Dot) of Lisbon, Connecticut; John Craig Greenwold (Carol) of Nashville, Tennessee; Mark Alfred Greenwold and Michael Shawn Greenwold, both of Lexington, South Carolina; and his daughters, Mary Theresa (Terry) Greenwold Greenaway (Jeff) of Greenville, South Carolina and Donna Rose Greenwold Duffy (the late John Duffy) of Chapin, South Carolina. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, Alfred was predeceased in death by his stepfather, Edward G. Shute; his son-in-law, John Duffy and his grandson, Adam Dallas Greenwold. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, April 23, 2015 at St. Peters Catholic Church, Assembly Street, Columbia, South Carolina. The viewing will be held just before the service at 1:30 p.m. Following the Mass, burial will be at St. Peter's Cemetery on Elmwood Avenue. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Birthright of Columbia, 1405 Gregg Street, Columbia, South Carolina. Arrangements are being handled by Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, South Carolina.
