Obituary of Martin Callie Grubbs

WEST COLUMBIA - Funeral services for Martin "M.C." Callie Grubbs Sr., 87, will be held 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at Thompson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel with burial to follow in Southland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service. Mr. Grubbs passed away May 17, 2015 at his residence. He was born on December 25, 1927 in Barnwell County to the late Franklin and Rosa Lee Still Grubbs. He was a US Army veteran with more than 28 years of service. Martin retired from South Carolina Department of Mental Health after 33 years of service. Mr. Grubbs was a member of Taylor Street Evangelical Methodist Church of Columbia. His hobbies included gardening, fishing and playing checkers. Martin is survived by his wife, Jessie Fox Grubbs; daughters, Wanda Grubbs and Tonya "Vette" Roark; three grandchildren, Timothy Roark, Alex Grubbs and Elizabeth Grubbs-Moore. Also surviving are sisters, Frankie Freeman of Barnwell, Lanell Hicks of Cayce and Lavern Bruner of Houston, TX. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth Edwards Grubbs; a son, Martin "Marty" Grubbs Jr.; brothers, Dewey Grubbs, Albert Grubbs and Bobby Grubbs. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
