I only recently happened upon the news that Col. Basil had passed away. My memory of him is that of Lt. Basil, 66th Armor 4th Armored Division..Ft. Hood Texas and Leipheim Germany. I was among the drafted EM who served as"Cold War Warriors" in the 1957-1959 period. He was someone who was easy to remember as much a friend as an EM-Officer relationship allowed. I remember several times "entertaining" him with hummed or whistled bar of "Moonlight In Vermont." I am from Massachusetts, and a fellow New Englander. Little did we know in 1959 what the future would hold, and was pleased to see that he retired as a Colonel.
Belated sympathy to his family........Gary Eggleston

I was with Major Basil in the newly formed 5/12th Battalion. I went with him, and 89 others in Advance Party to Vietnam. I worked directly with him for the almost 11 mos. I spent with the 199th Light Infantry Brigade. I was assigned to the Tactical Operations Center at the various fire bases, and had almost daily contact with him. One of my myriad duties was his jeep driver. He was a great officer and I had a lot of respect for the man. I wish to share one experience - I was driving him to an Armored Cav. Unit when I tipped the Jeep over at a 45 degree angle in deep water, almost dumping the Major. He managed to exit the vehicle and walk the rest of the way. Sometime later, I heard a roar of a mechanized vehicle, and to my embarrassment, here comes a tank with a full crew complement, to extricate me and the Jeep. I thought I was going to catch hell for what happened, but the Major was very gracious.

I just learned of the passing of Ben Basil and am saddened by his loss. He and I were together in the newly formed 5th Battalion 12th Infantry of the 199th Light Infantry Brigade at Ft. Lewis, WA in 1968, where we trained for several months then were deployed to Vietnam where we spent another year together. I was a young lieutenant and "Major" Basil at the time was our battalion XO. In my year in Vietnam I was a platoon leader for about half the year and the rest of the time a company XO and was assigned to work with Major Basil on many projects for the unit. I count him as one of the 5 or 6 individuals who had a major impact on my entire life. I learned so much from him that has benefited me throughout my life, including professionalism, integrity, perseverance, and always doing the very best you can do with every endeavor. He also had a keen sense of humor and love of life. I am forever grateful for his guidance and counsel to me. He was a great man.

To Ruth and Family: It was with great sadness that I learned of Ben's death. Although I hadn't talked to Ben in a long time, I still have fond memories of our years working together on the Legal Legislative Committee of the S. C. Cemetery Association. It took us 3 legislative attempts over 10+ years to get our Regulatory Board re-authorized and law amended. Ben kept us grounded as he had a simple way of looking at things…they were either right…or they were wrong - there was no in between! Our cemetery industry has missed Ben during his retirement years and we join with the family in their loss.
My thoughts and prayers will always be with Ruth and the Basil family.

Perhaps the last time I was with Ben was in 1953 at Norwich. Ben certainly was a fun person to be around. Ben was a happy person with a glowing sense of humor. He was an honest person who enjoyed being with people. Ben's decision to make the military his career certainly surprised me; at Norwich shining shoes and polishing brass was not at the top his priority list. Based upon his record in the Army it certainly appears that Ben was a dedicated professional.
