Obituary of Carl Lester Hooks

Carl Lester Hooks of North Augusta, formerly of Cayce, passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 after a 9 year battle with Alzheimers. He was born August 26, 1936 in Nichols, SC, the son of the late Lonnie Vander Hooks and Lula Mae Fowler Hooks. He graduated from Floyds High School and Columbia Commercial College. He retired from Nabisco after 40 years of service. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Amelia Hoffman Hooks. He is also survived by one daughter, Janet H. Porter of Painter, VA; one son, Mark R. Hooks and his wife Tracy of North Augusta. He was "Papa Carl" to four grandchildren, Jacob S. Porter of Painter, VA, Phillip R. "Flip" Hooks, Ansley M. Hooks and Zachary M. Hooks of North Augusta; one sister, Dorothy H. (Heyward) Brown, of Cayce; three brothers, W. D. (Gayle) Hooks of Sumter, Gene (Shirley) Hooks of Mullins and Olins (Debbie) Hooks of Batesburg; and a special cousin, Jane (Dock) Williamson of Mullins. He was an active member of State Street Baptist Church, the ABC Sunday School class, and a former member of First Baptist Church of Cayce, where he was the Royal Ambassador leader for 18 years. He also served as Deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was a member of Cayce Masonic Lodge #184. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2015 at Thompson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, 4720 Augusta Road, Lexington, SC. Interment will follow in Southland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2015 at the funeral home. Pastor Ken Jumper will officiate. Pallbearers will be Larry Bass, Charlie Dunlap, David Owens, Jim Owens, Mike Penn and Oscar Rucker. All are former Royal Ambassadors at First Baptist Church of Cayce. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the ABC Sunday School class. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to State Street Baptist Church, Building Fund # 70, 1420 State Street, Cayce, SC 29033.
