Obituary of Michael Cole Barnett

Michael Cole Barnett (62) passed away on August 10, 2015. He was born and raised in Houston, Texas to Jack and Gloria Barnett in 1952. He played high school and college football and enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends and family. He came to know Jesus as a freshman LSU football player in the fall of 1971. Mike married his high school sweetheart, Cindy, and they have enjoyed 41 years of life and ministry together. Mike holds an MDiv and a PhD in Church History from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Mike and Cindy served overseas for eight years facilitating and training workers in the least reached areas of the world. When they left the field in 2000 Mike began his teaching career; equipping and training students at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Columbia International University. He remained connected to the field, consulting with several mission-minded organizations. He touched thousands of lives in the classroom and marketplace. His life purpose was "To Know Him and to Make Him Known." His legacy is in his children and grandchildren, his students, his friends and colleagues, and his tireless dedication to "equipping the saints for the service of the Lord." Mike enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He and Cindy had planned to spend their retirement years in Bryan, Texas close to family. He is survived by his wife, Cindy, his son Cole Barnett, fiancé Laurel Laviolette and grandchildren, Lily, Jack and Leo; and his daughter Michelle (Barnett) Morris, husband Ben and grandchildren Benton and Avett. He is also survived by his brother, Scott McCorkle, wife Georgina and daughter Kathryn; sister, Elaine (McCorkle) Wells, husband Joe and children Joe and Emily; and brother Curtis McCorkle. The funeral will be held Saturday August 15, 6pm at Sagemont Church Chapel, 11300 South Sam Houston Pkwy E, Houston, TX 77089. Visitation will be prior to the service from 5-6pm. A graveside burial service will be on August 16, 5pm at Bryan City Cemetery, 1111 S. Texas Ave, Bryan, TX 77803. A Memorial service will be at held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2015 at Columbia International University, Shortess Chapel. Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington is assisting the family. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:19-20
