Obituary of Maudine J. Mills

Services for Maudine Jency Mills, 92, of West Columbia, will be held at 12:00pm on Friday, April 12 in the chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 11:00am until 12:00pm prior to the service, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Mills passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 7, 2024. Born in Lexington, she was the second daughter of the late Lucius Archibald Watts and the late Grace Elizabeth Watts. She met the love of her life, the late Theodore Arthur Mills, during a shift in the Orangeburg cotton mill, and they were soon to be married. After serving our country as a proud military spouse for twenty-two-and-a-half years, she and her late husband settled in Orangeburg before later relocating to Springdale, sharing numerous adventures together during their fifty-eight years of marriage.

Maude was a member of Northside Baptist Church for over three-and-a-half decades. There, she served the Lord for many years by lifting her voice with the Silver Saints Singers, directing her Sunday School group, and as a key member of the Widows/Widowers group. She also played an instrumental part in countless volunteer activities within the church. With God and family being the first loves of her life, she also spent many joyful hours gardening and coloring.

She is survived by her four children: Ted Mills, Jr. (Jamie) of Columbia, Patricia Zeigler (Carl) of Elloree, Gerald Mills (Phyllis) of Branchville, and Diane Bradley (Bill) of Abilene, Texas; sisters June Wilbanks of Lexington, and Tarzie Backman of Norway; eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

The family wishes to extend the deepest and most heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Lexington Medical Center’s Carrol Campbell Place and MSA Hospice. The love and care they provided will never be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, the family graciously requests that donations be made in Maude’s loving memory to one of the following charities:

Mission Columbia Program by Northside Baptist Church, 4347 Sunset Boulevard, Lexington, SC 29072; His House of Columbia, Inc., 4357 Augusta Road, Lexington SC 29073; First Baptist Church of Orangeburg’s Mission Action Center, 1240 Russell Street, Orangeburg, SC 29115, Nancy K.
