James "Jack" Hopkins

Obituary of James "Jack" Allen Hopkins

James “Jack” Allen Hopkins, 90, of West Columbia, SC passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 2, 2024.  He was born in Charleston, SC on February 8, 1934, to the late Oley Gifford Hopkins and the late Lillian May Brazell.

Jack attended Eau Claire High School.  He worked for Southern Bakery, then moved on to work for Owens Steel Company until he retired after 30 years of service.  Jack was also a United States Army Veteran and served in Germany as an Infantryman. He married his soulmate and constant companion, Jean Crapps Stone, on July 3, 1966.  They were married for 55 years.

Jack was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church for over 50 years.  He was a member of the Columbia Shag Club and elected to the Central South Carolina Shagger Hall of Fame.  As an avid vegetable gardener, he could not wait for spring to arrive so he could plant, work, harvest, and share his bounty with family and friends.  He was a Gamecock fan and spent many Saturdays tailgating with friends cheering for a Carolina Gamecock victory.  He also enjoyed fishing on Lake Murray every time he had the opportunity.  Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends.

Jack is predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Jean Crapps Hopkins; brothers, Oley Gifford Hopkins, Jr. and Robert William Hopkins; and sisters, Nancy Anne Jones and Alice Elizabeth Lydon.

He is survived by his daughter, Susan Register Steele (Bill) of Lexington, SC; his son, James Allen Hopkins, Jr. of Columbia, SC; granddaughters, Kaley Laura Powell (Michael) and Alexandra Cannon Steele; grandson, William Thomas Steele, IV; great-granddaughters, Sawyer Steele Powell and Charlotte Laura Powell; and brother, Gary Eugene Hopkins.
