Obituary of Margaret "Dee" Roland

Margaret "Dee" Davidson Roland of Columbia, SC, passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2024 of natural causes in her sleep.

Born in Lagrange, Georgia on October 2, 1945, the daughter of Edgar Mallory Davidson and Catherine Rembert Davidson, both are deceased. Also, her sister Nancy Davidson Severtson of Washington state is deceased.

Surviving are her husband Terry L. Roland of Columbia and son T. Raymond Roland of Cayce, SC. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her parents moved to Marion, SC to take care of aging grandparents while Dee was in grammar school. Skipping her senior year and graduating early at Marion High School, she went on scholarship to Brevard College in Brevard, NC. She graduated Cum Laude in 1964 with an Associate Arts degree in Secretarial Science. Upon graduation, she went to work at Olin Matheson Chemical Company in Brevard.

In June 1964, she married her high school sweetheart, Terry L. Roland. In 1966 they moved to Columbia, SC. where she began working in the education department of the state prison. In the early 1970’s she went to work as an Executive Secretary at Anchor Continental in Columbia. After about 1 year she was promoted to Shipping Supervisor, where she was the first female supervisor at Anchor. Then about 2 years later, she moved to the Purchasing department as a Buyer. A few years later, she retired to spend more time with her son and do volunteer work.

Dee was a long-time member of Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church. She regularly volunteered for various activities at the church. She especially enjoyed preparing and serving meals at the Wednesday night suppers. The fellowship during those times was especially gratifying to her. Sometimes she would also sing in the church choir during Christmastime.

In the late 1990’s, she went back to night school at Limestone College. She graduated in 1997 with a BS degree in Management. She took several classes with her son, Raymond, and greatly enjoyed them as they had a little friendly competition over who could have the highest grade.

Dee and Terry were long time members of Town Theater, over 20 years. At one point during that time, her nephew Corey started acting at Town. She greatly enjoyed watching him grow as a performer and scene designer.

Dee loved cats as well as other animals. During her lifetime, she adopted and cared for 9 different cats, starting way back in 1966. She enjoyed being the “Cat Mom” and even had that embroidered on her handbag. There are also numerous cat pictures in the house as well as many clothes with cat designs on them. Her cats will surely miss their “Cat Mom”.
